Foltynewicz with a great start in Norfolk

How long will it be before "Folty" is in Atlanta with the big Braves?

The Braves increased talent in the farm system continues to show results. Monday one of the best pitching prospects in Atlanta’s system pitched the best game of any pitcher in the young season.

Gwinnett’s Mike Foltynewicz pitched eight innings against Norfolk. He got the loss, but really, who cares? Foltynewicz allowed just one run on three hits, with one walk and nine strikeouts. The Tides won the game 1-0 over the Braves.

Foltynewicz threw 105 pitches. He had 90 pitches after seven innings, but Gwinnett manager Brian Snitker smartly left Foltynewicz in the game for one more frame. Foltynewicz awarded his skipper with one more strong inning. He actually struck out the last two batters he faced to finish his performance.

“Folty” is now 0-2 on the season, but his earned run average is 1.62 in his three starts. He has allowed 11 hits in 16.2 innings, with seven walks and 21 strikeouts.

With Eric Stults and Trevor Cahill off to slow starts in Atlanta, there may be more interest in what Foltynewicz is doing in Gwinnett. While the two veterans have made only three combined starts, the Braves have said they prefer not to rush the kids like Foltynewicz, Matt Wisler, Manny Banuelos and Williams Perez.
