Braves likely to recall Foltynewicz

Will the Braves start the revamp of the starting rotation?

When the Braves used Trevor Cahill out of the bullpen Wednesday night against the Nationals, it sent a clear message that a change in the rotation was imminent. Cahill was scheduled to make the start this Friday against Cincinnati, but he will not be able to make the start after throwing two innings and 47 pitches.

Conveniently, right-hander Mike Foltynewicz was scheduled to start Friday for Triple-A Gwinnett. So "Folty" will likely get the call and be promoted in time to make the start against the Reds at Turner Field Friday night.

Cahill allowed four runs on six hits in his two frames against Washington, with one walk and no strikeouts. His ERA is now 9.42. Cahill has allowed 15 earned runs in 14.1 innings, with eight walks and only five strikeouts.

Cahill could actually fill an important role for the Braves, who really need an effective long reliever. If Cahill could get on track, he could eat a lot of innings for the team in middle relief. But the Braves are obviously ready for the change to get Cahill out of the rotation.

This will not be Foltynewicz's first time in the big leagues. He made 16 appearances out of the Houston bullpen last season and had a 5.30 ERA in 18.2 innings, with seven walks and 14 strikeouts.

In Gwinnett, Foltynewicz has been outstanding. He's 0-3, but his ERA was 2.08. Folty has allowed 17 hits in 21.2 innings, with five earned runs allowed, 10 walks and 30 strikeouts.

Foltynewicz will likely still have some occasional struggles with his command, but it's time to see what this kid can do in the Atlanta rotation. Sure, he could have continued to pitch in Triple-A, but his confidence must be high considering how well his pitched in his four games with the Gwinnett team.

The Braves are expected to make the official announcement on the move Thursday.
