Shelby Miller shining for the Braves

Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins are off to great starts for the Braves.

The Shelby Miller trade is looking pretty good right now, don’t you think? Sunday’s two-hitter by Miller in Miami continued his tremendous start for his new team, the Atlanta Braves.

Miller is now 5-1 on the young season with a 1.33 earned run average. He’s allowed an unbelievable 29 hits in 54 innings, with eight earned runs, 16 walks and 43 strikeouts. Miller is making an early case for being the National League starter for the All-Star Game in Cincinnati in July.

But Miller’s success didn’t really start when the season began. You have to go back to late last season, when he was still with the Cardinals.

In his last five starts with St. Louis last September, Miller was 2-0 with a 1.48 ERA. He allowed 21 hits in 30.1 innings, five earned runs, five walks and 26 strikeouts.

So in Miller’s last 13 starts, he’s 7-1 with an ERA of 1.39. He’s allowed 50 hits in 84.1 innings, 13 earned runs, 21 walks and 69 strikeouts.

The other player in the offseason trade is doing pretty well himself. Tyrell Jenkins has made eight starts in Double-A Mississippi and has an ERA of 3.00. While Miller was doing his thing in Miami, Jenkins pitched seven scoreless innings in Pensacola.

The 22-year-old right-hander has now allowed 41 hits in 45 innings, with 19 walks and 26 strikeouts.

So combined, Miller and Jenkins are 7-3 with an ERA of 2.09, with 70 hits allowed in 99 innings, 23 earned runs, 35 walks and 69 strikeouts.

Regardless of what the other players the Braves sent to the Cardinals are doing, this trade looks great for Atlanta so far. But let’s be honest, since Jason Heyward is struggling and Jordan Walden is on the disabled list, it does make the trade look better for the Braves.

But for now the focus is on how Miller is helping Atlanta win now and how Jenkins is a great option for the future. That was the purpose of the trade, and it’s working out great so far.
