Gwinnett pitcher Matt Wisler tossed one of the best performances by any Braves minor leaguer all season Saturday against the Columbus Clippers.
Wisler pitched 8.1 shutout innings and allowed just two hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts. Wisler threw a season-high 112 pitches with 80 strikes.
For the season, Wisler is now 3-3 with a 3.58 ERA. He's allowed 54 hits in 55.1 innings, with 22 earned runs, only 11 walks and 46 strikeouts in his 10 starts. His previous start last Monday was only two innings due to a rain-suspended game that was resumed later in the week.
Wisler had a great month of May. In his six starts, Wisler allowed just 25 hits in 35.1 innings, seven earned runs, six walks and 26 strikeouts. That's an ERA of 1.78 for May after posting a 6.75 ERA in his first four starts in April.
There is no room in Atlanta's rotation right now, as Williams Perez has cemented his spot after a tremendous performance Saturday night in San Francisco. Perez and Mike Foltynewicz have done well since they have been promoted from Gwinnett to stabilize the Atlanta rotation.
In the nine games started by Foltynewicz and Perez, they are a combined 4-2 with an ERA of 2.98. They have allowed 52 hits in 54.1 innings, with 18 earned runs, 19 walks and 55 strikeouts.
And don't forget about Manny Banuelos, who was the fourth member of the Gwinnett opening day rotation that is considered a true prospect. Banuelos is 3-0 in six starts in May with an ERA of 1.11, with 26 hits allowed in 32.1 innings, four earned runs, 13 walks and 28 strikeouts.
So in May, Wisler and Banuelos are a combined 6-0 for Gwinnett in 12 starts, with 51 hits allowed in 67.2 innings, 11 earned runs, 19 walks and 54 strikeouts. The ERA is 1.46.
The pitching depth is doing pretty well for the Braves, both in Atlanta and in Triple-A Gwinnett.
