Minor League Report

Here are some notes from around the Braves minor league system. Arodys Vizcaino is doing well in his return from PED suspension.

Tyrell Jenkins continues to have some issues with walks. He had five walks in 5.1 innings Sunday and that was the only negative mark on his record. He allowed just three hits, one run and had six strikeouts. Jenkins did not figure into the decision as Mississippi beat Pensacola. Jenkins now has 41 walks in 86 innings, and in his last eight starts Jenkins has 27 walks in 48 innings. This came after a game on May 12 when he did not walk a batter in seven innings against the Mobile Bay Bears.

Arodys Vizcaino is doing well as he prepares to come back from his PED suspension. He pitched a scoreless inning Sunday and allowed one hit but struck out three batters. His ERA in four games with AA Mississippi is 1.80. He’s struck out seven batters in five innings with no walks. Don’t be surprised if Vizcaino is given a chance in the Atlanta bullpen once his suspension if finished if he continues to do well.

Newest Braves prospect Touki Toussaint pitched well Sunday in his debut in the Atlanta system. He allowed just one run on two hits in 4.1 innings, with five walks and five strikeouts. Toussaint had 15 walks in his 39 innings with Kane County in the Diamondbacks’ system. His most was six walks in six innings on June 1. But perhaps he was a bit nervous in his Braves debut. Rome beat Augusta 6-4 at State Mutual Stadium.

Will the Braves keep Ozhaino Albies in Rome or promote him to Carolina soon? The 18-year-old continues to tear up the Sally League. He has a 10-game hitting streak (.380 – 19-50) and is hitting .383 (36-94) so far in the month of June.

Danville right-hander Patrick Weigel continued his good early work in the Appalachian League. Sunday he pitched four hitless innings and walked just one batter with one strikeout. He now has allowed just two hits in six innings in his two starts, with one walk and four strikeouts. Weigel was Atlanta’s seventh round pick earlier this month in the MLB Draft.
