Could the Atlanta Braves be tempted by Mallex Smith’s surge in Triple-A and reward him with a promotion to Atlanta in September? It’s got to be something they are at least considering.
Smith continued his solid offense Friday night in Columbus. He was 1-3 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base (25) in one game of the doubleheader. In the game made up from May 31, Smith was 2-4 with a run scored.
Since that game’s box score was for May, it won’t show up in Smith’s numbers for August. But his August numbers are impressive nonetheless. He’s hit .328 with a .369 on base percentage in 61 at bats, with 11 stolen bases.
His 11 steals in 14 August games is his best monthly total yet. He had six steals in April, 10 in May and July and 11 in June.
In Triple-A, Smith is now hitting .262 with a .304 on base percentage and 25 stolen bases in 46 games. Including his numbers from Mississippi, Smith is hitting .302 overall with a .365 OBP and 48 steals in 58 attempts.
The Braves outfield is already a bit crowded after the acquisition of Michael Bourn last Friday. He’s mainly playing left field, with Cameron Maybin in center. But Smith may be deserving of consideration after his tremendous work at the plate this month in Gwinnett.
