Braves minor league notes

John Gant has done very well since coming over from the New York Mets.

Mallex Smith was 1-3 for Gwinnett Saturday night. His average is now .286 in Triple-A with 11 RBI and 27 stolen bases. Smith is now hitting .310 overall this season with 50 stolen bases.

Hector Olivera doubled in a run for the G-Braves in their 2-0 win over Norfolk. Olivera’s average is up to .222 in Gwinnett.

Mississippi got another great pitching performance from right-hander John Gant, who was acquired from the Mets in the deal for Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe. Gant allowed just one run on six hits in seven innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

For the Braves, in six starts, Gant is now 4-0 with an ERA of 1.54. He’s allowed 23 hits in 35 innings pitched, with 11 walks and 39 strikeouts. Before the trade, Gant had made 17 starts between High-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton and had a 6-5 record with a 3.52 ERA, 36 walks and 91 strikeouts.

So overall this season, Gant has now made 23 starts. He’s 10-5 with an ERA of 3.01. Gant has allowed 117 hits in 134.2 innings, with 47 walks and 130 strikeouts.

Rio Ruiz had another solid night for the M-Braves, as he went 1-4 with a bases-clearing double. Ruiz is now hitting .237 with four home runs and 44 RBI. In August, Ruiz has hit .313 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 99 at bats. Ruiz has had three bad months (.217 in April, .149 in May and .185 in July) and two good months (.310 in June and .313 in August).

Austin Riley was 2-4 Saturday night in Danville’s 10-3 win over the Blue Jays. He had a two-run home run, his fifth with Danville. His batting average for Danville is now .347, while he has 18 runs batted in for the Appalachian League team.

Overall, Riley is hitting .300 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 207 at bats. Riley was the 41st pick in the June draft.
