Braves Digest: 4/19

The Braves were off today. They start a long twelve game road trip Tuesday in Cincinnati against the Reds. <BR> <BR> <B><U>Minor League Quicks:</B></U> Trey Hodges struggles in Richmond, while Langerhans continues rake; Andy Marte cranked his first home rune of the season in Greenville; Luis Hernandez with the game winning hit for the Pelicans.

Atlanta (7-5) is in second place in the NL East, one game behind the Florida Marlins.


Richmond Loses 4th One-Run Game of Season

Richmond lost to the Indianapolis Indians 7-6 Monday afternoon as the Indians scored a single run in the ninth inning on a base hit by J.J. Hardy off Braves reliever Mike Romano.

Indianapolis scored four runs in five innings off Richmond starter Trey Hodges (5h - 5 ip - 4 er - 1bb - 5k). Hardy also had a home run off Hodges.

Richmond did have big offensive days from Ryan Langerhans (3-4 with a double, triple, and his second homer of the season) and Mike Hessman (2-4 with a triple and his second homer of the season).

The Braves are now 5-5 on the season.


Greenville Beats Jacksonville 5-2

The Braves played home run derby in Greenville Monday night, knocking out three big flies on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Jacksonville Suns.

James Jurries knocked a two run home run in the first inning, his third of the season. Later, third baseman Andy Marte hit his first home run in Greenville. Then in the 8th inning, Kelly Johnson had his third home run of the season.

Greenville (2-9) got a great pitching performance from Issy Pineda, who struck out ten batters in seven innings on his way to his first win of the year. Andrew Brown, a former Brave farmhand who was dealt to the Dodgers in the Gary Sheffield trade two years ago, suffered the loss for Jacksonville despite striking out thirteen G-Braves batters.

Kevin Barry picked up his first save of the year for Greenville.

The two teams will play game two of the series Tuesday night at 7:15 with Dan Meyer pitching for Greenville.


Pelicans Win On Hernandez Double in Tenth Inning

Myrtle Beach shortstop Luis Hernandez doubled in Jamie Hemingway in the tenth inning to give the Pelicans a 3-2 win over the Winston-Salem Warthogs.

Scott Thorman added a RBI single and Jamie Hemingway had a RBI double earlier in the game, but it was Hernandez who had the big night. The light hitting shortstop went three for five in the game to knock his average up to .188.

Efigenio Peralta started for Myrtle Beach and pitched five strong innings. Peralta allowed only one run on three hits, walked one, and struck out six. Glenn Tucker (1-0) got the win with three strong innings in relief.

The Pelicans play game two of the three game set Tuesday night at 6:05.


The Rome Braves are enjoying the day off as they return from their first road trip of the season. They start a series against Lakewood on Tuesday night at State Mutual Stadium in Rome with Bryan Digby scheduled to start.

The Braves are 6-4 on the season and tied for second place in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League, 1.5 games behind Capital City.
