Braves Digest: 4/20

<U><B>Reds 3, Braves 2</B></U>: Juan Acevedo tossed seven solid innings and Barry Larkin drove in two runs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park. <BR> <BR> <B><U>Minor League Quicks:</B></U> Greenville shut out; Anthony Lewrew goes 7 scoreless in Myrtle Beach win; Kyle Bakker gets win in relief for Rome.


Reds Nip Braves 3-2

Jose Acedvedo pitched seven strong innings to lead the Cincinnati Reds over the Atlanta Braves 3-2 Tuesday at the Great American Ballpark.

Marcus Giles accounted for the Braves only two runs off Acevedo with a 2-run home run in the third inning. The Reds got on the board in the fourth inning on a RBI double by Sean Casey making it 2-1 Braves. Then in the fifth, with runners at second and third, Barry Larkin singled to center scoring both runners and giving the Reds a 3-2 advantage.

John Thomson (1-1) pitched well for the Braves, going seven innings and allowing those three runs.

The Braves are 7-6 on the season and back to two games behind the Marlins in the National League East.

Horacio Ramirez (0-1, 1.29) will pitch against Aaron Harang (1-0, 4,09) Wednesday night.


Richmond has the day off Tuesday. They start a series with the Charlotte Knights Wednesday at the Diamond in Richmond with Travis Smith scheduled to pitch.

The Braves are 4-6 on the season, 2 games behind Norfolk in the South Division of the International League.


Suns Shutout Greenville

The first place Jacksonville Suns shutout the Greenville Braves Tuesday night 3-0 behind a great pitching performance from Ryan Ketchner.

One of the many impressive Dodger pitching prospects, Ketchner (1-0) pitched seven shutout innings allowing only five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. T.J. Hall would pitch the final two innings to get his first save of the season.

Greenville starter Dan Meyer was back after missing his last start with a sprained ankle. The lefty went three scoreless innings, allowed only one hit, one walk, and had five strikeouts. Meyer had a pitch limit of 60 for the game to protect him from further injuring his ankle.

The Suns scored all three runs in the fourth inning off of Armando Almanza, the Atlanta reliever who is rehabbing in AA. Almanza allowed all three runs on five hits in one inning of work.

The G-Braves (2-10) did get four solid innings from reliever Brett Evert, which is a positive sign. Alec Zumwalt pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Greenville and Jacksonville play game three of their four game series Wednesday night. Steve Smyth will pitch for the G-Braves.


Pelicans Blow Out Warthogs 10-0

Anthony Lerew pitched seven scoreless innings and his Myrtle Beach teammates banged out ten runs on fourteen hits as the Pelicans beat Winston-Salem 10-0 Tuesday night.

Lerew (1-1) had his best performance of the season, allowing only three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts in the seven innings. Ryan Basner pitched two scoreless innings to finish out the game.

The Pelicans offense was spread out as seven batters drove in runs. Gregor Blanco had his best game of the young season, going 3 for 5 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI. Ben Thomas was 3 for 5 with a double and a RBI. Jeff Francoeur went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI.

Scott Thorman continued his productive work with a RBI single. Catcher Brian McCann had his best game of the season going 2 for 4 with two doubles and 2 RBIs. Jonathan Schuerholz and Luis Hernandez both went 1 for 4 with RBI singles.

Game three with Winston-Salem Wednesday at 6:05. Blaine Boyer is scheduled to pitch for Myrtle Beach.

*Note: Jose Capellan missed his last start with a blister on his finger. He is not expected to miss significant time.


Rome Edges Lakewood 5-4

The Rome Braves got four innings of solid relief work from Kyle Bakker (2-0) and Jake Blakeney to beat Lakewood 5-4 Tuesday at State Mutual Stadium.

Rome starter Bryan Digby did not pitch poorly, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in five innings. Digby walked two and struck out two. Bakker and Blakeney each pitched two scoreless innings.

The Braves got solid production from teh #3 and #4 hitters in their lineup. Steve Doetsch went 2 for 4 with a double and RBI. Matt Esquivel connected for his third home run of the season and went 2 for 4 on the night. Esquivel is now hitting .463 on the season.

Josh Burrus continued his hot hitting with a double that scored two runs.

Rome (7-4) and Lakeland play again Wednesday. Chuck James is scheduled to go for the Braves.

*Note: The Rome Braves have placed right-handed pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez on the disabled list with shoulder tendonitis retroactive to April 17th . Rodriguez was 1-1 in three appearances with an ERA of 3.86. The league was hitting just .167 against him in only 4.2 innings pitched.

Jose Ascanio has been called up from extended spring training in Florida to replace Rodriguez on the roster. Last season in the Gulf Coast League, Ascanio was 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA in eight appearances.
