The Atlanta Braves have promoted this year's first round pick Joey Devine to AA Mississippi.
Devine picked up his first professional save Friday night as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat Frederick 6-3 at Coastal Federal Field. The right-handed Devine pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
The Braves selected Devine with the 27th overall selection in the June 7th draft. After he signed, Devine was sent to Myrtle Beach to start his pro career. In his five games with the Pelicans, Devine did not give up a run or a hit in five innings, walked three, and struck out seven.
Devine has an exceptional fastball, which tops out at 97 mph. He also has a devastating slider, which looks even more deceptive with his three quarters arm angle.
The six-foot, 212 pounder will join Mississippi Saturday in Pearl. The Braves believe he still has an excellent chance at being in the big leagues this season.
