Braves' centerfielder Andruw Jones was honored with his 8th straight Gold Glove Award on Wednesday, as announced by the National League.
Jones started all but one of the 159 games he played in this past season, and he made only 2 errors. The 28-year-old outfielder was tied for second in the National League with a fielding percentage of .995 (his highest in six seasons), had 11 assists, a 2.48 range factor, and a .873 zone rating.
Jones, who won his first Silver Slugger award on Monday and was named as The Sporting News‘ Major League Player of the Year, is also a leading candidate for the National League's Most Valuable Player Award, which will be announced next week. Jones hit 51 home runs and drove 128 runs this season. He becomes the fourth player to hit 50 home runs and win a Gold Glove Award in the same season, joining Willie Mays, Ken Griffey, Jr., and Alex Rodriguez in that exclusive group.
Former Brave pitcher Greg Maddux won his 15th Gold Glove Award. Other winners: Giants' catcher Mike Matheny (his 4th), Cubs' first baseman Derrick Lee (his 2nd), Marlins' second baseman Luis Castillo (his 3rd), Giants' shortstop Omar Vizquel (his 10th), Marlins' third baseman Mike Lowell (his 1st), Cardinals' outfielder Jim Edmonds (his 8th), and Phillies' right fielder Bobby Abreu (his 1st).
