The last couple of days we have had chats for our premium subscribers around lunchtime. I'm at Disney's Wide World of Sports and have conducted the chats from the Braves' minor league complex. Each day I'm going to try to grab a player for a few minutes to chat with our premium subscribers. Wednesday we had Will Startup and Eric Campbell join us for a few minutes. Here's the transcript of the chat with Startup as a preview of our premium content:
BillShanks:: I've got Will Startup with me for a few minutes. So shoot any questions to me now.
striker42:: Who's your pick for UGA QB, Stafford, Tereshinski, or Cox?
Will Startup:: I was really impressed with Tereshinski in the Florida game. I've known him for a while. I know his work ethic. I think he should get first shot.
BravesFreak:: How do you feel like you are throwing so far?
Will Startup: I fell good right now. I'm low in the zone. That's where I want to stay. I want to work on stamina. That's going to help my game. I'm pleased. I'm trying to develop a new slider and work on throwing a change up to lefties. So far so good.
anglerule2:: Also, how does it feel to be pitching for the braves has that always been your dream?
Will Startup:: Oh yeah. I've always grown up rooting for them. I lived in Jacksonville before we moved to Cartersville, and the Braves were the closest team then. It's a dream to be here. You just get to focus on your game and try to improve.
striker42:: Where are you going to start the year at?
Will Startup::... I've kind of gotten the feeling I'm going to start in Myrtle Beach... then the journey begins. I've just got to stay healthy and play well.
BravesFreak:: How do you like Roger McDowell?
Will Startup:: He's great. The first time I dressed out in spring training he called my name out. He's got different gears. From the short period of time I've known him, he knows how to handle everybody. He's got a lot of energy.
anglerule2:: we hear great things about you here... everyone raves about you... just wondering what you do as a closer to prepare yourself during the game... either mentally or physically?
Will Startup:: Halfway through the game I get up and try to start moving around and stretch. The first couple of innings I try to relax. Then my juices get flowing. I've got to start preparing to set up or go in in the ninth and close. I also know that if we're behind in the game, anything can happen. You've got to be ready to go. You can't be caught off guard.
striker42:: What major leaguer have you been compared to?
Will Startup::... I've been compared to Dontrelle Willis because of the leg kick. Mike Stanton. Stanton also because of the bulldog mentality he has.
tvsportscaster:: How far away from the Big Leagues do you think you are?
Will Startup: I really believe it could go two different ways... however the bullpen in ATL performs this year and what their needs are or if I just blow people away this year. I'm not going to put a date on it. Expectations can lead to disappointment. I feel it depends on how well the bullpen does up there. I feel I could be ready to go this year, but I have to trust in the process.
anglerule2:: Have you been able to work with Clint Sammons during your time in the minors... if so i imagine that has to be pretty nice.
Will Startup: I played with him in Rome. It was a seamless transition. I've thrown a few pens to him in Spring Training. I'll throw to any catcher, but my preference is Clint Sammons. We're on the same page. I've only shaken him off once in my life!
striker42:: Did you know you were going to get picked by the Braves ahead of time or was it a surprise?
Will Startup:: My hopes were getting down. I had come to a tryout with the Braves, but I thought I had blown it. They had seen me in 2004 and they knew what I could do. I could not have written a better script. There is no other place I'd rather be.
anglerule2:: lol yeah bulldawgs are on the same page... usually its the winning page too lol
BillShanks:: Okay that's it. Thanks for stopping by Will.
BravesFreak:: Thanks Will
tvsportscaster:: Good luck Will, we'll see you in Atlanta soon
anglerule2:: thanks Will...
striker42:: Thanks Will, looking forward to seeing you on the mound at the Ted!
anglerule2:: appreciate the time
chrisgentry110401:: thanks Will
Will Startup:: Thank you for having me in. See you in Atlanta soon!
