After taking three of four in Durham, the Braves head back home to start a four-game set against Rochester. Jonathan Johnson (1-1, 5.10) is scheduled to pitch for the Braves, who are 24-10 on the season and 8.5 games up on the Bulls in the International League's South Division.
Richmond's pitching continues to be the story. The 2.73 team ERA is best in the league and the next closest team (Louisville) has a mark of 3.03. Buddy Carlyle is tied for the league lead in victories with five. He's also eighth with a 2.37 ERA. Trey Hodges has a 2.48 ERA in his first seven games, good enough for tenth in the league.
The Braves go for win number five in a row when they play game four of a five-game series in Birmingham tonight starting at 8:05 pm ET. Dan Smith (3-2, 2.33) is scheduled to go for the Braves, who are 26-12 and lead the Southern League's South Division by five games over the Jacksonville Suns.
Like Richmond, Mississippi leads their league in team ERA at 2.87. The next club in that stat is Birmingham, with a 3.32 ERA. Smith is second in the league with his ERA. Lefty Matt Harrison is ninth with a 3.02 ERA.
Outfielder Matt Esquivel is tied with Evan Longoria for first in the league with ten home runs. Brandon Jones is fourth with eight home runs. Esquivel is second to Longoria in RBIs with 33. Jones is fifth in the league with 27 runs batted in.
Myrtle Beach plays game two of the series with Potomac tonight at 7:35. Dustin Evans (1-2, 6.09) will go for the Pelicans against Nationals' lefty John Lannan (5-0, 2.57). The Pelicans are 17-20 and 4.5 games back of Kinston in the Carolina League Southern Division.
The Pelicans announced Monday they are going to host the Carolina League / California League All-Star game in 2008 at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach.
The Braves close out their series in Columbus tonight starting at 7:00 pm. Tommy Hanson is scheduled to go for Rome. He's 1-2 on the season with a 2.25 ERA. Hanson's 49 strikeouts are tops in the South Atlantic League. The Braves, losers now of four in a row, are 10-27 on the season, 17 games back of the Asheville Tourists in the Sally League's Southern Division.
