Minor League Preview - April 4

Here's a look at today's schedule around the minor leagues.

Richmond hosts Rochester tonight at 7:00 for game two of the series at the Diamond. Hopefully the weather will be better tonight in Richmond than it was on Thursday for the opener, when wind and rain made the conditions somewhat miserable. Jo Jo Reyes was scheduled to start for the Braves, but he's being called up for a few games to be in the Atlanta bullpen. The Braves did sign veteran catcher Sal Fasano to a contract and he will join the Richmond roster for tonight's game and back up Clint Sammons.

Right-hander James Parr will try to give Mississippi its first win of the season when he pitches tonight in Huntsville in game two of the series with the Stars. Parr was 4-5 in Mississippi last season and struck out 75 batters while walking 25. Parr now has 439.1 innings entering this season and has struck out 340 and walked only 104. He'll face lefty Derek Miller. First pitch is 8:05. The Braves lost last night 8-2. Dan Smith started for Mississippi and gave up five runs, four earned runs, on six hits in 3.2 innings. The Braves have yet to win an Opening Day game in their four seasons in Mississippi.

The Pelicans kick off their season tonight in Wilmington to play the Blue Rocks. First pitch will be at 7:05 with Tommy Hanson going for the Pelicans. Manager Rocket Wheeler will have several players to watch closely in his lineup, including shortstop Brandon Hicks and center fielder Gorkys Hernandez, who was acquired from the Tigers in the Edgar Renteria trade last October.

Rome will try again tonight for its first win of the season when southpaw Scott Diamond goes to the hill for the first time in his professional career. Diamond was signed late last summer by the Braves and pitched only in the Instructional League. Lefty Chad Rodgers will come in after Diamond. Charleston will start right-hander Noel Castillo. Weather permitting, first pitch will be at 7:00.
