Minor League Preview - April 13

Here's Sunday's schedule around the Braves' farm system.

The Braves (7-2) try for win number six in a row this afternoon when they take on a very bad Lehigh Valley team (0-10) in game three of a four-game set. Lefty Jo Jo Reyes will head to the mound for Richmond against IronPigs' southpaw J.A. Happ. First pitch will be 1:35. Reyes did not allow a run in five innings against Buffalo in his season debut last Tuesday. He gave up only one hit, walked two, and struck out six.

Richmond's offense has perhaps been the key to its fast start. Barbaro Canizares's hot spring training has carried over to the start of the season. He's hitting .400 with a home run and seven RBI so far. Clint Sammons is also hitting .400 with four RBI. And Josh Anderson's average is at .359 and he has four stolen bases.

To replace the released Scott Speizio on the roster, the Braves promoted infielder Mike Rozema to the Richmond roster.

Dustin Evans will try to get the Braves back on track as he pitches today at Trustmark Park against the Mobile BayBears. First pitch will be at 2:05. Evans allowed five earned runs in three innings in his first start of the year.

The Braves are 2-7 on the season, with both wins coming at home. Mississippi has scored only 28 runs in its first nine games. And the pitching has been surprisingly bad, as the team ERA is a Southern League-worst 5.63.

It's the third and rubber game against the Frederick Keys for the Pelicans this afternoon at 5:05 at BB&T Coastal Federal Field. Gonzalo Lopez (0-1, 3.60) will go for Myrtle Beach against Jake Renshaw (1-0, 3.00). Lopez gave up two runs in three innings in his first start of the season.

The Pelicans placed Chris Vines on the disabled list today with a groin problem. He'll be replaced on the roster by Michael Nix, sent down from Double-A Mississippi.

The Pelicans are 4-5 on the season. The pitching has been the story so far this year, with the team ERA of 2.34 the best in the Carolina League.

Rome and Charleston play game three of a four game series this afternoon at 5:05. Jeff Locke will try to get back on track after what was perhaps his worst start of his pro career. Locke gave up ten runs (eight earned) on nine hits in 3.1 innings, with two walks and only one strikeout.

The Braves are 4-6, and surprisingly the team ERA is a league worst 5.97 through the first ten games of the season.
