Along with the addition of Seattle reliever Eric O'Flahery, the Braves placed three minor leaguers on the 40-man roster Thursday: pitchers Todd Redmond and Stephen Marek and infielder Diory Hernandez.
Redmond was the Southern League Pitcher of the Year after posting a 13-5 record in Mississippi. Redmond, acquired from the Pirates back in March for reliever Tyler Yates, had a 3.52 ERA in 28 games (27 starts) and allowed 164 hits in 166.1 innings, with only 33 walks, and 133 strikeouts. He'll probably be penciled in for the Gwinnett rotation in Triple-A, but Redmond will get his audition in big league camp next February.
Marek was acquired from the Angels in the Mark Teixeira trade in July. He pitched in 10 games for Mississippi and had a 3.21 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 14 innings. The 6'2" right-hander has not allowed an earned run in 12 games in the Arizona Fall League. Marek will get a pretty decent chance to win a job in Atlanta's bullpen in spring training.
Hernandez started the season in Mississippi and hit .286 in 22 games. The infielder then went to Richmond and hit .288 in 120 games with five home runs and 53 RBI in 459 at bats. In Richmond Hernandez played 52 games at second base, 31 games at shortstop, and 37 games at third base. He's a versatile infielder who will fight for a job as a reserve in spring training. He'll likely head back to Triple-A, but if the Braves need an infielder in 2009 Hernandez will get his shot in the big leagues.
