Needing a starting pitcher on Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced on Sunday that need will be filled by left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons.
The Cardinal Nation's 35th-ranked prospect had quietly improved in 2012 as he moved up to Triple-A. This season, Lyons has not been as strong. The 25-year-old has a 4.47 ERA in eight Pacific Coast League starts, where opponents are batting .306 against him. He does have a solid 38:9 strikeout to walk ratio in 46 1/3 frames with Memphis.
The Cardinals' ninth-round draft pick in 2010 from Oklahoma State is not yet on the 40-man roster, so both 40-man and 25-man roster moves will be required by Wednesday. If surgery is required on Jaime Garcia's shoulder, his shift to the 60-day disabled list would be the first step. The second may be the optioning out to Memphis of a reliever, perhaps to assume Lyons' spot in the Redbirds' rotation.
Became a Cardinal
Selected in the ninth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. Signing announced July 25, 2010 for a reported $40,000.
He moved into Palm Beach’s rotation in late June after 21 relief appearances. In his 12 starts, Lyons had a 7-2 record with a 4.41 ERA. He fanned 57 and walked 18 in 65 1/3 innings. Lyons moved on to starting in the Arizona Fall League in October and November.
After signing in July and reporting to short-season Batavia, the left-hander was diagnosed with tendinitis in his pitching elbow and was shut down for the remainder of the summer.
Lyons struggled with consistency in 2009 and 10 while excelling during the summer. With Team USA in 2008, he did not allow a run working out of the bullpen. On the Cape in 2009, he posted a 1.77 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 45.2 innings.
In spring 2010, he posted a record of 3-6 with a 6.06 ERA while striking out 80 and walking 18. The southpaw pitches in the high 80’s with a solid curveball that he struggled commanding. Due to these struggles, Lyons found a new feel for his changeup that has made it a valuable secondary pitch.
Lyons was previously selected in the 10th round of the 2009 draft by the New York Yankees.
