Essentially, last year Swagerty started Spring hurt. He recovered in time to be a part of the Quad City rotation. Until then he had mainly been a starter so he was racking up innings fast. They switched him to relief pitch because he was already over his all time innings limit. They didn't want to shut him down completely so they had him pitch in relief. Yes, his durabilitiy is in question because he hasn't started since HS, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a starter in HS.
Essentially, he started to work on his pitches and see what we have as a starter and they changed him because they didn't want to blow his innings total out of the water. Yes, he was a great closer at ASU who is to say he couldn't ahve been a starter. If I remember correctly that team was pretty good. Seth Blair and Mike Leake both started when Swagerty was a freshman.
I understand that. I do. And really, that's my point. Being used like he was last year probably led to him tearing up his elbow. Not the best omen.
Wacha is not a good comparison at all though. Perhaps Joe Kelly would be a proper comparison. Kelly was a college reliever as well and for 3 years. Kelly then increased his innings in 2010 to 103-ish while playing at Quad Cities in his first full year of pro ball.
