Springfield Cardinals Beef Up Playoff Roster

Two hurlers have been added to the Cardinals' Double-A club for Wednesday's Texas League playoff opener.

Heading into Wednesday night's Texas League first-round playoff series at Northwest Arkansas, the Springfield Cardinals made three roster moves.

Already down one pitcher with the promotion of Adam Reifer to Triple-A Memphis, Springfield added pitchers Kevin Thomas and Matt Frevert from Palm Beach. The Florida State League Cardinals were the only farm club of the top six in the system that did not reach the post-season. Both Thomas and Frevert will be making their Double-A debuts.

In a related move, Springfield also placed pitcher Ryan Kulik on the disabled list.

Thomas, 24, is fresh off having been named the St. Louis Cardinals organizational Pitcher of the Month for August. The right-hander went 4-1 with a 1.18 ERA in his six August starts and fanned 36 in 38 innings.

On the season, the Cardinals' 33rd-round pick in 2008 went 10-2 with a 2.27 ERA for Palm Beach. Thomas had a 94-38 strikeout to walk ratio in 107 Florida State League innings over 29 games, including 14 starts.

Frevert, a native of Columbia, MO, was a 2010 Florida State League all-star. This season, the 23-year-old right-hander appeared in 45 games for Palm Beach, all in relief.

Frevert went 6-1 with a 2.15 ERA, had a 66:14 strikeout to walk ratio and held opposing hitters to a collective .210 average over 54 1/3 innings. The former Missouri State star joined the Cardinals in the 28th round of the 2008 draft.

For Kulik, it likely marks the end of what had to be a very frustrating season. The 24-year-old was returned to Springfield from Memphis on August 18 after having been promoted to Triple-A for the second time this season on July 19. Kulik struggled with his control with Memphis, walking 21 while striking out only four in 20 innings.

Upon his return to Springfield, the lefty was hammered in three starts and a relief appearance, allowing 21 hits and 15 earned runs over 14 1/3 innings for an ERA of 9.42.

Reifer was called up to Memphis prior to its final regular season game on Sunday and picked up the win in his Triple-A debut. It appears the 24-year-old righty may remain with the Redbirds during the post-season, as a roster spot was opened up with the promotion of Tyler Greene to St. Louis.
