Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 09/11/10

Lance Lynn fanned a team-record 16 as Memphis swept Oklahoma City, Springfield lost and Quad Cities was eliminated from the Midwest League playoffs Friday night.

Memphis 6 at Oklahoma City 2


The Redbirds return to the Pacific Coast League finals after sweeping Oklahoma City in three games with an opportunity to repeat as league champions. It was Memphis' third consecutive post-season sweep.


Memphis was paced by an impressive 16-strikeout performance over seven innings by Lance Lynn, setting a team record in the process. The right-hander retired his final 20 in a row and had just one out made in the outfield.


Donovan Solano had three hits and scored twice while Mark Hamilton plated a pair. Jim Rapoport reached base all four times while Daniel Descalso and Ruben Gotay were on base three times on the evening.

The PCL finals begin Tuesday night in either Memphis or Sacramento. If Tacoma beats Sacramento in the National Conference finals, stadium renovations there will require the entire finals to be played in Memphis.



Northwest Arkansas 5, Springfield 2


The Naturals tied up the best-of-five series at one game apiece as their starter, Everett Teaford, dominated, giving up just three hits and no runs over the first seven innings. Springfield ace David Kopp yielded single runs in the first, second and sixth innings, the last two on solo home runs. Matt Frevert allowed the final two NWA runs in the seventh.


The Cardinals collected two runs at the end, but it wasn't enough. Aaron Luna, Andrew Brown and Matt Carpenter all singled to make the score 5-1. Pinch-hitter Chris Swauger bounced into a double play to score Brown with the second run. Jose Garcia drew a walk and Antone DeJesus followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate in Nick Derba, but he flied out to end the game.


All eight Springfield hits were singles.

The Bandits were eliminated in the best of three series losing the final two games at home. Quad Cities and starter Daniel Bibona took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning, when the Cougars plated four against Bibona and three more were charged to Nick Greenwood. The three relievers who followed were hit up for eight more runs.


Devin Goodwin had three hits and Rainel Rosario hit a solo home run.
