Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 09/12/10

Brian Broderick allowed two runs over six innings as Springfield took a 2-1 Texas League series edge after defeating Northwest Arkansas Saturday night at Hammons Field.

Game played Saturday, September 11.

Springfield 13, Northwest Arkansas 9

After dropping Game 2 Friday night in Springdale, Arkansas to even the best of five series 1-1 with NW Arkansas, the Cardinals returned home to Hammons Field for Games 3 and 4 this weekend. The 3,536 fans in attendance Saturday night would see plenty of offense.

The Naturals took the early 2-0 lead against Cards starter Brian Broderick on a first-inning Eric Hosmer two-run home run, his third of the series.

In the home third, Jermaine Curtis' RBI single scored Daryl Jones to bring the Cardinals within a run.  Pete Kozma then singled to load the bases and chase NWA starter John Lamb from the game.  Reliever Rowdy Hardy allowed a Matt Carpenter sacrifice fly scoring Nick Derba to tie the game at two.

In the fourth, Derba singled down the left field line with the bases loaded, driving in Chris Swauger and Xavier Scruggs as the Cards took their first lead, 4-2.  With runners on the corners, Curtis reached on a fielder's choice allowing Jones to score from third.  New reliever Brandon Sisk allowed an RBI single to Carpenter and a bases loaded walk to Andrew Brown to increase the Springfield lead to 7-2. Scruggs tripled off the right field wall to clear the bases and give the Cardinals a 10-2 edge.

Springfield's offense kept the pressure on in the fifth as Carpenter doubled to score Nick Derba. After a fly out, Aaron Luna singled through the left side to score Curtis to increase the Cardinals lead to ten runs, 12-2.

Broderick scattered just three hits after allowing Hosmer's home run while striking out five over his six solid innings of work. Thomas Eager relieved, allowing a two run home run to Anthony Seratelli to cut the Cardinals lead to 12-4 in the seventh.

The Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the inning as Carpenter reached on a two-base error before Brown lined a double into the left field corner to score Carpenter.

The ninth was not a good inning for the home club. Jason Buursma allowed six hits including an RBI double, an RBI single, a two-run double and another RBI single to make the score 13-9. Buursma then hit the next batter to put the potential tying run in the on-deck circle. Manager Pop Warner had to call on closer Blake King, who struck out Tim Smith to end the game.
