Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 09/13/10

Northwest Arkansas tied Springfield at 2-2 in their Texas League series after defeating the Cardinals Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field.

Game played Sunday, September 12.

Northwest Arkansas 6 at Springfield 5

Carrying a 2-1 lead into Game 4 of their best of five Texas League North Division series, Springfield manager Pop Warner sent Nick Additon to the mound on nine days rest.

For the second straight day, NW Arkansas took the early lead on an Eric Hosmer two-run home run to right center field in the top of the first.

The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the frame as Jermaine Curtis, Pete Kozma and Matt Carpenter each singled before Andrew Brown grounded out to third scoring Curtis to cut the lead in half.

Springfield tied the game in the second as Xavier Scruggs drew a leadoff walk and Nick Derba doubled. Curtis then grounded a ball to second base with the infield back scoring Scruggs from third to even the score at two.

Carpenter, who was slumping at the plate heading into the playoffs, launched a solo home run into the bullpen beyond the left field fence to give the Cardinals their first lead, 3-2.

After the first-inning home run, Additon retired 13 straight batters before issuing a harmless walk in the fifth, but a single and another two-run home run, this one by Clint Robinson, put NWA back on top in the sixth. Additon left the game after that inning, having allowed four runs on four hits while striking out seven.

Springfield answered right back in the home sixth as Daryl Jones doubled and Derba followed with a double to re-tie the game. Curtis then doubled to left to score Derba as Springfield took a 5-4 lead.

After a single in the eighth chased reliever Ramon Delgado, Scott Gorgen was called out of the bullpen to face Hosmer. The result was the same as it was against Additon in the first as the Naturals' first baseman hit another two-run shot to give the visitors a 6-5 lead. It was Hosmer's fourth home run in the four games.

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the eighth but didn't score and had one on in the ninth before Jones struck out to end the game. In the small consolation department, the Cardinals out-hit the Naturals 14 to 8.

The decisive Game 5 will be played on Monday night at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Arkansas.
