AGM Abbamondi Departs Cards for San Diego

St. Louis Assistant General Manager John Abbamondi becomes San Diego Padres Vice President of Strategy and Business Analysis.

On Wednesday, the San Diego Padres announced they have named John Abbamondi Vice President, Strategy and Business Analysis. President and Chief Operating Officer Tom Garfinkel made the announcement.

"John is an exceptional person and a great thinker with a diverse background," said Garfinkel. "The combination of his understanding of baseball economics and his strategic leadership will help take our business development plans to a new level. We look forward to having him join our executive team."

Abbamondi will join the Padres in January 2011, following three seasons as Assistant General Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. During his tenure at the Cardinals, he had a hand in all aspects of the club's Major League baseball operations.

Prior to joining the Cardinals, Abbamondi spent four seasons with Major League Baseball's Labor Relations department, most recently as Senior Director of Labor Economics. He was a member of Commissioner Selig's staff that successfully negotiated the 2006-2011 Basic Agreement with the Players Association, and played an integral role in the redesign of MLB's revenue-sharing system.

At MLB, Abbamondi also served on the staff of the Revenue Sharing Definitions Committee, with an emphasis on the valuation of broadcast rights fee agreements. Additionally, he led all financial analyses of MLB and union economic proposals during collective bargaining with both the Players Association and the Umpires Association. Abbamondi also served as a consultant for MLB Advanced Media on in-market streaming strategy.

Prior to beginning his career in baseball, Abbamondi served nine years in the U.S. Navy. A former naval flight officer, he is a veteran of 40 combat missions over Iraq and a two-time recipient of the Navy Air Medal. Abbamondi planned, briefed and flew more than 450 tactical flights with more than 300 aircraft carrier landings.

A native of Choctaw, Okla., Abbamondi is a 1993 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. In 2004, he earned his Master of Business Administration from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
