The 5-foot-11, 195 pounder has split his time playing second base, shortstop and third base, along with a handful of games at first base throughout his nine-plus years in the big leagues.
The 34-year-old spent the 2010 season in the minor leagues for Pittsburgh, Seattle and Houston. A career .254 batter, the left-handed hitter played in 128 games for San Diego in 2002, hitting .274 with 21 doubles. He played over 100 games in 2007, 2008 with Texas and in 2009 with Pittsburgh.
Vazquez could compete for a reserve infield position against Daniel Descalso and Tyler Greene or serve as Triple-A veteran reserve support as did Ruben Gotay in 2010.
Vazquez becomes the fourth minor league free agent signee by St. Louis this winter and the third in two days. The other three are pitchers Raul Valdes, Miguel Batista and Ian Snell.
