Cardinals Winter Leagues Notebook: 01/20/11

Raul Valdes K's seven in a complete game winning decision in the Dominican League Championship for the Player of the Day honors. Ex-MiLB Javier Brito doubles and drives in two runs in the LVBP. Former MiLB Robinson Cancel collects three hits and scores and ex-Cardinal Kiko Calero earns the win in Puerto Rico. Former MiLBs Terry Evans, Mike Folli, and Brandon Yarbrough find new homes for 2011.

Javier Brito (Former Memphis-Margarita) started at first base and batted fourth.  2-for-4 with one double, one two-out RBI, and one strikeout.

Raul Valdes (MiLB Signing-Azucareros) started and pitched nine innings.  He allowed six hits, three earned runs, two walks, and struck seven out for the winning decision (4-0). (g/f:3-16)

Puerto Rican League Championship


Robinson Cancel (Former Memphis-Ponce) started at catcher and batted seventh. 3-for-5 with one run and allowed two stolen bases.


Bartolo Colon (White Sox Free Agent-Caguas) started and pitched five innings.  He allowed five hits, four earned runs, one home run, two walks, hit one batter, and struck three out. (g/f:8-4)

Kiko Calero (Former St. Louis-Caguas) entered in the 11th and pitched to two batters.  He allowed no hits or runs, and struck two out for the winning decision (1-1). (ir-s:2-0)

Jorge Carlos Soler and Alejandro Piloto were caught making the jump from Cuba to the U.S. and will be returned.  Miami Sports Consulting was able to sign infielder Indalecio Alejandrez : El Nuevo Herald

Former Lotte closer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who was waiting on an MLB team, has decided to sign with Hanshin in the NPB: Japan Ball



Australian League


Chad Gabriel (Former Quad Cities-Brisbane) started as designated hitter and batted fifth.  1-for-4 with one double, one RBI, one strikeout, and one caught stealing.


Adelaide beat Brisbane 6-1
