Cardinals Winter Leagues Notebook: 02/02/11

Raul Valdes strikes out five over 6 1/3 innings in a no decision, former MiLB Julio Manon blows the save and Iker Franco drives in the winning run as Obregon tops Azucareros in 15. Ex-MiLB Orber Moreno earns a hold and former MiLB Robinson Cancel doubles as Caribes beats Caguas. Former affiliated players Jamey Wright, Mark Worrell, Felipe Lopez, Javier Colina and Timo Perez sign deals for 2011.

2011 Caribbean Series Hosted By Mayaguez, Puerto Rico


Raul Valdes (MiLB Signing-Azucareros) started and pitched 6.1 innings.  He allowed three hits, two runs (one earned), one walk, and struck five out. (g/f:7-7)

Julio Manon (Former Johnson City-Azucareros) entered in the eighth and pitched 1.2 innings.  He allowed two hits and one earned run for the blown save (1). (g/f:1-4)(ir-s:2-0)


Iker Franco (Former Springfield-Obregon) started at catcher and moved to first base, batting sixth.  1-for-7 with one RBI, one strikeout, threw out one of three runners, and assisted in one double play.

Alberto Castillo (Former MiLB Signing-Obregon) started and pitched 5.2 innings.  He allowed seven hits, three unearned runs, one walk, and struck two out. (g/f:9-4)

Dan Serafini (Former Memphis-Obregon) entered in the ninth and pitched to two batters.  He allowed one hit and no runs. (g/f:0-1)

Hugo Castellanos (Former Memphis-Obregon) entered in the 14th and pitched 1.1 innings.  He allowed one hit, no runs, one walk, and hit one batter. (g/f:3-1)(ir-s:2-0)


Obregon beat Azucareros 4-3 in 15 innings

Orber Moreno (Former Memphis-Caribes) entered in the seventh and pitched one inning.  He allowed no hits or runs, one walk, and struck two out for the hold (1). (p-s:11-7)(g/f:0-1)


Robinson Cancel (Former Memphis-Caguas) started at catcher and batted ninth. 1-for-4 with one double, one run, and one strikeout.

Ivan Maldonado (Former MiLB Tryout-Caguas) entered in the ninth and pitched to four batters.  He allowed one hit, no runs, and one walk. (p-s:7-3)(g/f:0-2)
