Dominican Summer League Cardinals Coaches Set

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced their 2011 coaching staff for the Dominican Summer League.

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced their 2011 coaching staff for the Dominican Summer League, a roster that will assuredly have a different feel with the organization's decision to suspend baseball operations in Venezuela this year.

One of the three front-line coaches is new to the Cardinals organization, one returns after having been away from the system for a few years while the third has the same job as in 2010.

Manager - Frey Peniche
Hitting Coach - Jobel Jimenez
Pitching Coach - Bill Villanueva

Coach (infield) - John Matos
Coach/Academy Instructor - Selin Aquino
Athletic Trainer - Amauris Rivera
Strength and Conditioning Coach - Pedro Doble

Prior to joining the Cardinals, Peniche had logged a dozen years in various coaching roles in the Detroit organization and prior to that was a player in their system.

Peniche spent the last four seasons as the manager of the Dominican Summer League Tigers. His clubs had two second-place finishes and his overall record was 132-139 (.487). Before becoming manager, Peniche served as a coach with the DSL Tigers for seven seasons (2000-06) after spending the 1999 season as a coach with Single A Oneonta.

He played four seasons at the minor league level with the Tigers after signing as a non-drafted free agent in December 1994. Peniche finished with a .208 batting average in 114 games of action with the Gulf Coast League Tigers (1995-97) and Single A Jamestown (1998).

Peniche replaces Claudio Almonte as the DSL Cardinals skipper. Almonte had led the club in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Jimenez was previously the hitting coach for the 2008 Venezuelan Summer League Cardinals. He had worked previously with the Red Sox and attended scout school class in the Dominican Republic in 2004 with Cardinals vice president Jeff Luhnow. Jimenez replaces Rene Rojas, a former scout who had been in the job the last three seasons.

Villanueva has been the DSL pitching coach since 2009. Previously, he served as assistant to then-Jupiter Complex pitching coordinator Derek Lilliquist (now the major league bullpen coach) and worked with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals staff.

The 2011 DSL Cardinals will have a mix of players from the Dominican as well as selected players transferred from the now-defunct Venezuelan Summer League Cardinals roster.

The 72-game season is slated to begin around Memorial Day and run until late August. We will once again feature daily player results from the 2011 schedule as well as a weekly DSL Cardinals team report all season long here at The Cardinal Nation.

Note: The majority of the Cardinals 2011 minor league coaches were previously announced in October.
