Cardinals Winter Leagues Notebook: 02/08/11

Raul Valdes allows four hits and no runs over 7 2/3 for the win and former MiLB Julio Manon finishes off the game to earn his third save, while ex-MiLB Robinson Cancel collects two hits as Azucareros shuts out Caguas. Former MiLB signing Alberto Castillo strikes out four over four innings as Obregon slips past Caribes for the 2011 Caribbean Series crown. John DeAguas injury update.

2011 Spring Training


I exchanged messages with John DeAguas (VSL), who missed the entire 2010 season with arm and shoulder problems.  The 19-year old left-hander says he is 100% ready for spring training.  With the demise of the VSL team, DeAguas with have a chance to make the DSL, GCL, or short-season ball club this spring.


2011 Caribbean Series Hosted By Mayaguez, Puerto Rico


Iker Franco (Former Springfield-Obregon) started at catcher and batted sixth.  0-for-2 with one walk, threw one runner out, and one passed ball.

Alberto Castillo (Former MiLB Signing-Obregon) started and pitched four innings. He allowed five hits, two earned runs, one home run, and struck four out. (p-s:64-43)(g/f:2-5)

Robinson Cancel (Former Memphis-Caguas) started at catcher and batted sixth.  2-for-4 at the plate.


Valdes and award

Raul Valdes (MiLB Signing-Azucareros) started and pitched 7.2 innings.  He allowed four hits, no runs, one walk, hit one batter, and struck six out for the winning decision (1-0). (p-s:45-40)(g/f:8-9)

Julio Manon (Former Johnson City-Azucareros) entered in the eighth and pitched 1.1 innings.  He allowed no hits or runs, and struck two out for the save (2). (p-s:8-8)(g/f:0-1)(ir-s:3-0)

Jorge Vazquez (Yankees-Culiacan/Obregon) was named MVP; Iker Franco (Former Springfield-Obregon) and Raul Valdes (MiLB Signing-Azucareros) were named to the Caribbean Series All-Team: Licey official Site


Dave Hudgens (Mets Hitting Coach-Caracas MGR) discussed the Caracas season and doesn't know if he will be brought back next year: Beisbol Venezolano


Cesar Izturis (Former St. Louis-Lara) just wanted to return to the Orioles and was excited when they called to re-sign him over the offseason: El Universal


Carlos Delgado (Red Sox Free Agent-Carolina) is training to get back in shape so he can return to the majors: Primera Hora


Hugo Castellanos (Former Memphis-Obregon) and Julio Manon (Former Johnson City-Azucareros) are expected in Triple-A Mexican League's Monterrey spring camp after the Caribbean Series: MiLB Official Site

1. Obregon - Mexico 4-2

2. Azucareros - Dominican Republic 3-3

3. Caguas - Puerto Rico 3-3

4. Caribes - Venezuela 2-4



North American League's Arizona Winter League


Marcos Chavez (Former VSL-Yuma) entered late in the game as designated hitter and batted eighth.  0-for-1 at the plate.


San Diego beat Yuma 8-7
