Cardinals Add Pair to MLB Spring Camp

Lefty John Gast and righty Scott McGregor receive the call to join the St. Louis Cardinals major league camp.

The St. Louis Cardinals have increased the number of spring training non-roster invitees to major league camp by two to 21 with the additions of left-handed pitcher John Gast and right-handed pitcher Scott McGregor, a club official confirmed Thursday.

The two were already part of a group of top organizational prospects invited to early minor league camp scheduled to begin tomorrow, on Friday, February 25. Coincidentally, that group began at 21 players.

John Gast
Gast, The Cardinal Nation's 28th-ranked Cardinals prospect, joined the organization in the sixth round of the 2010 draft from Florida State University. He was assigned to short-season Batavia of the New York-Penn League and earned our TCN Rookie Minor League Starter of the Year award.

In the regular season, Gast went undefeated, getting wins in six of his eight regular-season starts. He logged an impressive 36-to-8 strikeout to walk ratio over 35 innings. Gast's WHIP was 1.00 and he posted a .227 batting average and a 1.54 ERA. His ground ball to fly ball ratio was a solid 1.73-to-1. He sports a low-90's fastball, excellent changeup and an improving breaking pitch. Gast excels at holding runners close, with a superb pick off move.

McGregor, St. Louis' 15th round selection in the June 2008 draft from the University of Memphis, began the 2010 season at A-Advanced Palm Beach before making his Double-A debut in late June. With Springfield, he made 15 appearances, 12 starts, and tossed 80 2/3 innings. Now 25 years of age, McGregor allowed 82 hits and just nine walks with 49 strikeouts for a 5.4:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 3.46 ERA in the regular season.
