Cardinals Trim Four from Spring Roster

Anderson, Chambers, Cazana and Vazquez sent down from St. Louis to Memphis.

Following Thursday's game, the St. Louis Cardinals optioned catcher Bryan Anderson and outfielder Adron Chambers to the Triple-A Memphis roster and they have re-assigned non-roster infielder Ramon Vazquez and outfielder Amaury Cazana to the Memphis roster.

Anderson, 24, had only six at-bats over six spring games. He collected just one hit, a double, for a .167 average. Anderson registered two RBI. He fanned twice and ground into one double play.

In his first spring camp, Chambers batted .273 (6-for-22, all singles) and exhibited solid defense. He was 2-for-2 in stolen bases, walked three times and was hit by one pitch. The 24-year-old struck out five times and ground into two double plays.

Vazquez could have made a strong bid for a reserve infield spot, but the 34-year-old hit just .105 (2-for-19) in camp. Daniel Descalso and Matt Carpenter remain to compete for the job. Vazquez' hits included one double and he added an RBI. He drew four walks, scored four times and fanned three times.

Cazana, 36, batted just .154 (2-for-13, both singles) on the spring. The Cuban native struck out three times, drew two walks and he was twice hit by pitches.

With the moves, the Cardinals now have 40 players in major league camp. The players remaining in major league camp include 31 of the players on the 40-man roster including injured players Adam Wainwright and Nick Punto plus nine non-roster invitee players. The NRI group is made up of five pitchers and four position players.
