Growing up listening to Jack Buck and Harry Caray and later Mike Shannon broadcasting St. Louis Cardinals games played a big part in why I am here today, doing a job I have specifically chosen and that I love.
In my role reporting about the organization, I always welcome the opportunity to work with radio stations, and especially so when members of the nine-state Cardinals Radio Network call.
My most recent interaction with one of the network affiliates was different from the others, though. It was with a station I listed to in the 1960s and 1970s - KMA in Shenandoah, Iowa.
KMA 960 AM always came through, whether on the newfangled factory AM radio-8 track player in my Mom's Mustang convertible (which I still proudly maintain to this day), our console radio in the living room or my trusty 9-volt battery-powered transistor radio. The latter, with its lone earphone, could be easily concealed under my pillow for stealth night listening.
In fact, later in life, I purchased and restored a Zenith console tube radio from the 1940's. As the photo confirms, one of its six pre-set pushbuttons is for none other than KMA.
With that lengthy and personal introduction, I offer audio of my discussion with KMA's Derek Martin in which we set up the 2011 Cardinals season. A preview is provided here for The Cardinal Nation subscribers (see our special buy one, get one month offer available through Opening Day).
Non-subscribers can catch my segment over the air on both KMA 960 and KMA FM 99.1 at 5:50 A.M., 9:15 A.M., 2:45 P.M. and 6:20 P.M. CDT on Wednesday, March 30. Both stations are also streamed live over the internet at kmaland.com.
Cardinals fans in southwest Iowa, northwest Missouri, northeast Kansas and eastern Nebraska can catch Cardinals games all summer long on KMA FM 99.1, including Thursday afternoon's season opener, of course!
