Born in Walnut Creek, California and now living in Lafayette, Cal., Watson had a non-traditional college career. He played just two seasons in total for two different colleges but still earned his degree in sociology. Watson pitched in 2007 and again in 2010 after sitting out both the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Watson graduated from high school in 2005 and redshirted his freshman year in 2006 with Cal. He made his collegiate debut with the 2007 Bears before transferring to Davis. With Cal in 2007, he appeared in 12 games, all but one in relief. Watson's ERA was 9.95 as he allowed 14 runs in 12 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked six.
Last spring with the Aggies, Watson went 1-5 with a 7.67 ERA. His strikeout to walk ratio was 20/16 in 56 1/3 innings. Opposing hitters batted .351 against him. Watson started eight games and relieved in nine. He committed two errors in the field.
Cardinals pitching prospect Daniel Bibona was a 2010 teammate at UCD while major leaguer Allen Craig was a senior on the 2006 Cal Bears. Watson's 2007 Cal teammates included top Cubs prospect, outfielder Brett Jackson as well as Matt Gorgen, twin brother of Cardinals minor league pitcher Scott Gorgen.
