Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 07/05/11

The Cardinals system went 3-4 on Monday. Johnson City's Gary Apelian was on base all five times and had four RBI on a walk, two singles, a triple and home run.

Nashville 5, Memphis 4

 

The visiting Redbirds gave back 2-1 and 3-2 leads before pulling even at 4 in the eighth. The game ended on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by Chuckie Fick after a Nick Stavinoha error. Tyler Greene homered and drove in two to lead the offense.

The home club scored early and often - five in the first, six in the second and four in the fourth - eliminating the Cardinals' brief one-run lead. Ex-Cardinals farmhand Gary Daley went six innings for Midland while Cards starter Kevin Thomas had one of the ugliest lines of the season.

#1 draft pick Kolten Wong hit his first professional home run to put the visitors up 2-1 in the fifth, but the Bandits did not score again. Hector Corpas blew the save in the ninth and Cale Johnson yielded the walkoff in the 11th without recording an out.

In front of a home crowd that included farm director John Vuch, starter Jonathan Cornelius was sharp, allowing just two baserunners over the first four innings. The home club came back to win with three in the bottom of the eighth. Oddly, all three runs scored on Mahoning Valley errors, so no Muckdogs received RBIs.
