Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 07/16/11

The system went 5-3 on Friday as Nick Stavinoha hit a pair of two-run homers in Memphis' doubleheader split. Palm Beach's Carlos Martinez and Batavia's Jonathan Cornelius made strong stats though neither won.

Brian Broderick was charged with five runs over four-plus innings. Nick Stavinoha's two-run home run was most of the Memphis offense.

Shelby Miller often battled through deep counts, but hung in for 89 pitches and five innings for the win. The Cardinals rapped out 13 hits. Zack Cox was on base four times, scoring twice, and Jose Garcia plated three.

Though he wasn't the scheduled starter, Carlos Martinez pitched very well. He took the tough loss despite allowing just one run over six innings. The offense managed just three hits.

The Bandits were no-hit for six innings but stormed back from a 4-1 deficit with five in the eighth. Victor Sanchez' home run was the difference. Kolten Wong extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Corey Baker allowed three in the top of the ninth to turn a 3-0 lead into a tie, but the home club walked off on a bizarre play. Garrett Wittels took off from third in an attempt to steal home. Caught in a rundown, he ended up scoring on a throwing error by the third baseman when the ball hit him in the back.
