Adams to Lead Cards into Arizona Fall League

Batavia pitching coach Arthur "Ace" Adams will be coaching elite mound prospects in the Arizona Fall League, but has some unfinished business in the New York-Penn League first.

When the St. Louis Cardinals send about four of their Double-A and A-Advanced pitching prospects to the Arizona Fall League finishing school this October and November, they will have a familiar face on their side.

Batavia Muckdogs pitching coach Arthur "Ace" Adams has been named to play that role for the 2011 Peoria Javelinas. Now in his second year with Batavia, Adams previously spent two years with Quad Cities and has almost three decades of coaching experience in college programs as well as with the Montreal, Florida and Boston minor league systems.

This year's Peoria club will be managed by Pedro Lopez, skipper of the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League and will be staffed with players from the Brewers, Mariners and Padres organizations, along with the Cardinals and Mets.

In this exclusive interview for The Cardinal Nation subscribers, Adams discusses his selection as Peoria's pitching coach, his view of the league, his current priorities and how he plans to prepare for the AFL. In bonus coverage, he talks about several of his current arms with the Muckdogs and which ones he would like to see become 2011 New York-Penn League all-stars.

Arizona Fall League rosters have not yet been announced, but the league schedule has been published. The six-team circuit will feature action each Monday through Saturday afternoons (and occasionally evenings) starting on October 4 and running through November 19. Games are held in six spring training stadiums around the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Two men with ties to the Cardinals are managing other AFL clubs this year. On behalf of the Chicago White Sox, former St. Louis favorite Joe McEwing will be leading the Mesa Solar Sox while ex-Cardinals minor league player and coach Todd Steverson will be piloting the Phoenix Desert Dogs on assignment from the Oakland A's.

As always, I will be reporting from Arizona on the Cardinals prospects competing in this year's AFL and plan to attend the league's Rising Stars Game on November 5.
