Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 08/27/11

The Cardinals system went 2-5 on Friday as Deryk Hooker threw six one-hit innings for Springfield. Charlie Tilson drove in one in his Johnson City debut.

Nashville 7, Memphis 1

 

After Shane Robinson's first-inning double, 19 Redbirds in a row were retired until Nick Stavinoha's seventh-inning solo home run. By then, Memphis starter Brian Broderick had yielded four runs on eight hits over six frames. Bryan Augenstein gave up three more runs in the seventh and that was that. The hitters drew zero walks on the evening for the first time this season. Stavinoha's hitting streak is at 16 games.

Springfield 9, NW Arkansas 0

 

Deryk Hooker's first home start since May was one to remember as the right-hander allowed just one hit and two walks in six scoreless innings. Hooker fanned four. The offense rapped out 14 hits, led by Eric Duncan. The designated hitter walked, singled, homered and drove in three.

Jupiter 11 at Palm Beach 10

 

In his first start since returning from Springfield, Arquimedes Nieto gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings of work. Down 10-0 in the fourth, three-run homers by Kyle Conley and Niko Vasquez helped bring the Cardinals close. Starlin Rodriguez had three hits and scored twice. Seth Maness was impressive in his third outing with Palm Beach with four scoreless innings of relief.

Quad Cities 9 at Peoria 1

 

The Bandits cracked 18 hits, including home runs by Jonathan Rodriguez, Edgar Lara and Nick Longmire. The latter two were two-run shots and Longmire added a third RBI as well and scored three times. The only Peoria run was unearned as Ronny Gil committed two errors. Winner Anthony Ferrara went five innings, with Cale Johnson and Justin Edwards tossing two scoreless frames each.

Auburn 2, Batavia 1

 

Romulo Ruiz singled, doubled and collected the lone Muckdogs RBI in the fourth inning. Ryan Sherriff pitched well, yielding just two runs in six innings on five hits and a walk, but still was saddled with the loss.

Danville 2, Johnson City 1

 

The Cards were shut out through seven while Eduardo Hiraldo allowed just four hits and two runs over six innings. Only one Danville run was earned as a Matt Williams error led to the other. Roberto De La Cruz was 4-for-4, but was picked off once and never reached home. Charlie Tilson went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI in his JC debut.

GCL Marlins 5, Cardinals 0

 

Stalyn Lopez allowed eight hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings, but two tallies were unearned as the Cards committed a trio of errors. Leandro Mateo and Jem Argenal each singled and doubled.
