Batavia Muckdogs 2011 Reliever of the Year

Former Miami closer and eighth round 2011 draft pick Danny Miranda is the top relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals' New York-Penn League affiliate.

A team's closer is typically its best reliever and that was the case in 2011 for the Batavia Muckdogs as closer Danny Miranda is The Cardinal Nation/Scout.com Batavia Reliever of the Year.

Background -

Miranda is clearly a pitcher the Cardinals wanted as they drafted him twice.  St. Louis first selected him out of Miami Killian High School (FL) in 2008.  The southpaw chose to attend the University of Miami instead where he pitched exclusively out of the bullpen.  By his junior year, Miranda was the Hurricanes' closer and the Cardinals re-drafted him in the eighth round of the June 2011 First-Year Player Draft.  He received a $125,000 signing bonus.

2011 Season -

At 20 years, nine months and 23 days old on Opening Day, Miranda was just over a year younger than the roster's average age of 21-10-1.  The left-hander was the Muckdogs' closer for the entire season.  Below are his stats, both for the entire season and broken down by month.

2001 season:  27 G, 15 S, 2 BS, 30.2 IP, 21 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 7 BB, 27 SO, 2.42 FIP, 2.64 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, .194 BAA, .256 BABIP, 7.9 K/9 IP, 2.1 BB/9 IP, 3.9:1 K/BB, 22.5% K/BF, 5.8% BB/BF, 64% GB, 3:1 GO/AO, 36% SO, 48% GO, 16% AO

So, runners scored in five of the eight appearances.  As noted, however, Miranda was done in by his defense in two of the five scored upon appearances.

Overall, Miranda was used back-to-back only twice during the season:  once in early July against Mahoning Valley (Cleveland) when he notched two saves and again in late July against eventual league champion Staten Island (NYY) where he picked up a win in the first appearance and a blown save and a loss in the second one.

Honorable Mention -

While Miranda's 2001 season was the best of the bullpen, another Muckdogs reliever merits an honorable mention:  right-hander Cory Baker.  Baker was drafted in the 49th round of the June 2011 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh.  He both started and relieved his freshman year before moving primarily in the rotation his final three years with the Panthers.  The right-hander was three months under Batavia's average age on Opening Day.

Baker appeared in 15 games in relief for the Muckdogs before moving into the rotation when play resumed after the New York-Penn League All-Star squad.  That move coincided with starter Seth Maness' promotion to A-Advanced Palm Beach and southpaw Ryan Sherriff's promotion to Batavia's rotation from Johnson City.  Below is a chart listing Baker's season stats and then a break-down between reliever and starter.
