Cardinals AFL Interview Series: Tyler Lyons

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitching prospect Tyler Lyons speaks from the Arizona Fall League in this exclusive interview.

Tyler Lyons had every reason to be on top of the world. I spoke with him this past Wednesday after the left-hander threw three five perfect innings, 15 up and 15 down, for the Peoria Javelinas in Arizona Fall League action.

Lyons charting pitches
The St. Louis Cardinals had designated Lyons, 23, as their starting pitcher in the AFL, where they placed him to build up innings. His target is approximately 35.

His pitching coach, also from the Cardinals system, Ace Adams, commented on Lyons' AFL campaign to date.

"He has pitched really well," Adams observed. "He's had maybe two bad innings… other than that, I thought he has thrown the ball very well.

"He has great stuff. He has an outstanding late-breaking curveball. He's got good run on his two-seamer. He can throw his change up for strikes. He's got starter's stuff, plus he pitches well against lefties," the coach said.

In this exclusive audio interview, Lyons talks about his mid-season move from reliever to starter, what he learned from Palm Beach pitching coach Dennis Martinez that helped the mental part of his game and recapped his repertoire – a two-seamer he moves to both sides that sits at 91-93 MPH and hits 94, a four-seamer, change-up, curve and slider.
