The new assignment, with the June First-Year Player Draft its most visible output, essentially replaces a major element of the former responsibilities of Jeff Luhnow, who joined the Houston Astros as their general manager last month.
|Kantrovitz starred at Brown|
A shortstop, he had been the organization's 25th round draft selection in 2001 from Brown University. There, Kantrovitz earned two All-Ivy League first team selections and finished seventh in league history in hits with 207. He batted .417 his senior season, including a Brown single-season record 68 hits.
His undergraduate degree was in organizational behavior and management. While in school, Kantrovitz had interned for two summers in the Cardinals' front office and caught the eye of John Mozeliak, then director of baseball operations.
After a stint in investment banking, the Missouri native worked his way back into the game when he was employed by a company that performed baseball analysis work for major league organizations. Kantrovitz was hired by Mozeliak into St. Louis' front office in 2004 and spent over four years with the Cardinals, filling a number of roles, including director of college scouting.
Prior to joining the A's, Kantrovitz returned to school to continue his education, earning a masters degree in statistics from Harvard University. Upon officially joining Oakland in 2009, he became Coordinator of International Operations/Baseball Operations Analyst, focused on locating the best talent world-wide.
In 2010, Kantrovitz spoke with our Oakland A's sister site, Oakland Clubhouse. In the subscriber interview, he discusses his responsibilities and experiences both with the Cardinals and the A's.
