Westbrook, Jay lead Cardinals over Mets

Six shutout innings from Jake Westbrook helped the Cardinals defeat the New York Mets in Jupiter, Fla. on Wednesday. Jon Jay had the walkoff RBI single.

Jake Westbrook pitched six scoreless innings but the St. Louis Cardinals needed Jon Jay's walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to seal a 2-1 win over the New York Mets in Grapefruit League action on Wednesday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter Florida.

Westbrook, who became the first Cardinals starter to go at least six innings this spring, allowed just three hits while striking out three and walking none. Jay's RBI single in the ninth inning scored Adron Chambers with the winning tally. Lance Berkman collected St. Louis' other RBI. The Cardinals had 10 hits, all singles.

Mets starter Johan Santana was also very sharp as he struck out six batters and allowed just one run on six hits over his six innings of work. Jordany Valdespin hit a solo home run off Fernando Salas in the top of the ninth for the Mets' only score.

The contest concluded in a snappy two hours, seven minutes and might have made two hours had Mets manager Terry Collins not made a pitching change during the ninth, removing former Cardinal Miguel Batista.
