Cardinals 2012 spring interview: Matt Adams

Our annual St. Louis Cardinals spring interview series continues with an in-depth discussion with Triple-A first baseman and top ten prospect Matt Adams.

Most St. Louis Cardinals prospect watchers are already familiar with the story of Matt Adams, who will open the minor league season Thursday night just one step away from the major leagues. The first baseman from Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania had been a catcher in high school and attended Slippery Rock University, not known as a baseball powerhouse.

Even after earning the Most Valuable Player Award in the 2008 New England Collegiate Baseball League, Adams was an after-thought in the 2009 First Year Player Draft. The Cardinals selected him as the 699th overall pick, in the 23rd round.

Less than three years later, Adams is one of the most celebrated hitting prospects in the system. The left-handed batter is the reigning Player of the Year in the Texas League and the Player of the Year in the entire Cardinals organization according to both the Cardinals themselves and The Cardinal Nation. Our ninth-ranked Cardinals prospect coming into the year led his leagues in both slugging percentage and RBI in each of the last two seasons. He set new Springfield team records in home runs (32) and RBI (101) in 2011 while batting .300.

With the spring training camp injury sustained by Mark Hamilton, Adams, a non-roster invitee, was the beneficiary of extra playing time and remained in major league camp until March 25. With St. Louis this spring, the slugger went 10-for-36 (.278) with a double, triple, two home runs and eight RBI. Adams also fanned 10 times.

As his time in big-league camp was nearing its end and Adams was preparing to assume the first base job with Triple-A Memphis this season, I sat down with the 23-year-old to recap his baseball journey to date.
