Berkman hits Cardinals DL and Adams called up

Lance Berkman's knee injury has put him on the disabled list, replaced by first base prospect Matt Adams.

As expected, on Sunday the St. Louis Cardinals placed first baseman Lance Berkman on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee injury and replaced him with Triple-A first baseman Matt Adams. The 23-year-old Adams was added to the 40-man roster with the official terminology that his contract has been purchased from Triple-A Memphis.

Adams is the reigning Minor League Player of the Year as named by the Cardinals organization and The Cardinal Nation. The left-handed hitter was also the Double-A Texas League Player of the Year in 2011 while with Springfield. Coming into 2012, Adams was The Cardinal Nation's ninth-ranked prospect. He will be making his Major League debut with his first game appearance.

With Memphis, Adams was batting .340 (48-for-141) with a team-high nine home runs and 27 RBI in his 37 games. He ranked among Pacific Coast League leaders in slugging (.603-6th) and OPS (.978-10th). His batting average is 12th in the PCL and his home run total is tied for fifth.

Against right-handed pitching, Adams was batting .379 (39-for-103) with eight of his nine home runs. With runners in scoring position, he batted .370 (10-for-27).

Adams is arriving in a hitting groove. During May, he is batting .361 (22-for-61) with five home runs and 16 RBI. On Friday night at Las Vegas, Adams launched two home runs, including a grand slam, good for a season-high five RBI.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder was the Cardinals' 23rd round (699th player overall) draft selection in 2009 from Slippery Rock (Pa.) University. He will wear uniform #53.

Berkman is taking his second stint on the DL this season, having been sidelined April 19 to May 12 with a left calf strain. More details about the severity of his current injury will be shared when disclosed.
