On Monday, it is Double-A Springfield's turn for an upgrade. This time, it is on the pitching side.
Prior to their afternoon matinee, the Texas League club welcomed right-handed starting pitcher Seth Maness and righty swingman Chris Corrigan from Palm Beach while right-handed bullpenners Jorge Rondon and Scott Schneider were sent back down to the Florida State League Cardinals, according to the Springfield News-Leader.
Rondon, a 23-year-old Venezuelan, is familiar with the trip, as he split time between Palm Beach and Springfield in 2011. He wasn't particularly effective in either location, going 2-13 with a 7.03 ERA. Walks are a problem, with 46 in 64 innings last year. In 2012, Rondon fanned 10 but walked seven in 12 1/3 Texas League frames. His Springfield ERA was 5.11.
Schneider, 23, made the Springfield club out of spring training last season when he took the ball for 20 starts and 15 relief appearances and logged a 5.98 ERA. Repeating Springfield in 2012, the Cardinals' 20th-round selection from the 2009 draft allowed a whopping 18 runs in just 12 2/3 innings (12.79 ERA), fanning seven and walking seven more. Now, he is returning to Palm Beach, where he spent the second half of 2010 after his promotion from Quad Cities.
Update: It appears that the initial report on Rondon provided by Springfield's media relations was incorrect. Instead of being sent down, the right-hander was placed on Springfield's disabled list, effective May 18, reports MiLB.com.
Other roster news
Palm Beach activated outfielder Michael Swinson from the seven-day disabled list on Sunday. The 22-year-old is coming off his second DL stint of the season, which began on May 4. In 2012, the left-handed hitter is 15-for-70 (.214) with just one extra-base hit.
Details of the corresponding roster move by Palm Beach will be provided via hot news when made available.
With the injury callups to St. Louis, Triple-A Memphis is currently down two players. Once the Cardinals take action to remedy this, we will share the details as well.
