The club placed second baseman/outfielder Skip Schumaker on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain. The 32-year-old suffered the injury during the Cardinals final game of the Atlanta series on Wednesday. The transaction is retroactive to May 31. Earlier, Schumaker was on the DL from opening day until April 20 due to an oblique strain suffered during spring training.
Infielder/outfielder Allen Craig has been activated from the disabled list after missing the minimum time allowed. The 27-year-old was out due to a left hamstring strain and had missed 14 games during the 15 days since being placed on the DL on May 18. Though he has played in only 13 games this season, Craig has been very productive, with 19 RBI. He had earlier sat out the entire month of April while recovering from off-season knee surgery.
Freeman, The Cardinal Nation's 34th-ranked prospect coming into the 2012 season, was with Double-A Springfield on opening day and pitched in 15 games there with a 1-3 record and 1.56 ERA (3 ER/17.1 IP). After his promotion to Memphis, he pitched 6.0 innings in six games, allowing three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out five.
Freeman was selected by St. Louis in the 32nd round of the June 2008 draft from the University of Kansas after playing two years at North Central Texas College. He was added to the Cardinals' 40-man roster over the winter to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. With St. Louis, Freeman will wear uniform #61.
To get to know Freeman better, check out his blog entries outlining his winter ball experience in Venezuela this past off-season. Those articles ran here at The Cardinal Nation.
With St. Louis, Freeman takes the roster spot of Brandon Dickson, who was sent down to Memphis on Thursday. To review the other earlier changes, click on the following link: "Cards shuffle relief deck on Thursday".
