Jay, 27, had been on the disabled list since May 16, missing 35 games with a sprained right shoulder, the after-effects of an earlier collision with the outfield wall. The left-handed hitter went 3-for-7 with a home run, triple and three RBI in his two-game injury rehabilitation stint with Memphis.
Jay was batting .343 with two home runs, eight RBI and four stolen bases in 27 games to begin the 2012 season for St. Louis. He is expected to take over his regular centerfield spot, perhaps shifting Skip Schumaker to see more time at second base.

Though he came up as a third baseman, Carpenter manned first base in 18 of his 24 games started with St. Louis. He can also play corner outfield if needed, but will likely primarily back up Allen Craig and David Freese at the corner infield positions upon his return.
Adams, 23, was added to the 40-man roster and promoted from Memphis on May 20 when Berkman was placed on the DL. The left-handed hitting first baseman appeared in 27 games in his first stint in the majors, with a line of .244/.286/.384. Adams hit two home runs and drove in 13. Earlier, the reigning Player of the Year in the system batted .340 with nine home runs and 27 RBI in 37 games with Memphis.
Chambers, 25, was recalled from Memphis on May 18 when Allen Craig was placed on the DL. The left-handed hitting outfielder went 9-for-36 (.250) with three RBI and two runs scored in 23 games with St. Louis. His only extra-base hit was a triple. Earlier, Chambers batted .308 with one home run and 12 RBI in 37 games with Memphis.
Memphis' corresponding transactions to make room for Adams and Chambers have not yet been announced, but will be covered here via subscriber-based hot news items as soon as details are available.
