Cards prospect speaks: Batavia SS Alex Mejia

The St. Louis Cardinals' fourth-round draft pick from last month talks about his experiences.

It has been a wild last 30 days for Alex Mejia. First, the shortstop was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. Then, his University of Arizona club won a berth in Omaha and became College World Series champions.

By the start of August, his new chapter as a professional athlete began. The 21-year-old came to terms with the Cardinals on a contract that included a signing bonus of $294,200. Mejia was assigned to the short-season Class-A Batavia Muckdogs.

Through his first nine professional games, the right-handed hitter has been leading off while logging a line of .297/.333/.405. Mejia has four doubles out of 11 hits, five RBI, but only two runs scored. He has been drawing good reviews on his defense, as well.

I spoke with the California native about his recent whirlwind of events.
