Quad Cities Bandits Notebook: 2012 Week 18

The Midwest League club has a pitching shakeup as a playoff berth remains in their sights.

After a season's worst 0-6 last week, the Quad Cities River Bandits came back much stronger this week after four games at home and three more in Burlington. They were 5-2 during this stretch and should have swept Peoria at home. Tuesday's game this week will wrap up the four-game series in Burlington.

In a special promotion this year, the Peoria Chiefs and the River Bandits had a "Rivertown Showdown" with a trophy and bragging rights as the prizes to the winner. With three wins over the Chiefs this week, the Bandits took first honors in the rivalry. With no more regular season match ups, the Bandits have captured a 9-4 margin against Peoria this year.

Quad Cities is still struggling in the standings, yet hoping for a playoff berth. They are currently 21-22 (.488) and 5.5 games out of first, but only two games out of second place, which would still allow a spot in the post season. The schedule is favorable. Of the 27 games remaining in the season, the Bandits will play 19 at home.

This week, I had planned to talk to Stephen Piscotty, but John Steinbeck has written about the best-laid schemes of mice and men. It just didn't happen this week but I'll do my best to sit down with Stephen in the next few days and will include that in my next report.

This week saw the promotion of Danny Miranda to Palm Beach and the return of Boone Whiting from extended training. This will be Boone's first 'real' game action since last year. Willy Paulino was sent back to Johnson City after a very shaky year in the bullpen and in the starting rotation. Maybe a pitching shakeup will help the club in the last few weeks of the year.

Pitching seems to be the main challenge. In Wednesday's game against Peoria, the club scored 10 runs and lost. That should never happen. Rather than rehash the criticisms that I've offered the last couple of weeks in looking at what the Bandits need, this is going to be a short report. Let's all hope that the pitching changes are the right answer to the struggles there.

One of the most exciting give-aways starts this week. On Wednesday evening, the first 2,000 fans will receive replica World Series rings, just like the ones given away at Busch Stadium earlier! If you can't make it to the game this week, mark your calendar because they will repeat the promotion on Wednesday, August 22! Please note, this is an attendance prize - one per person in attendance, not one per ticket purchased.

I really AM going to sit down with Piscotty this week - please send questions that you would like me to ask. I'll need those questions by Thursday, August 9. Post them on the forum or send me a private message at sport61201.

Thanks for reading!
