Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 09/10/12

Chris Swauger and Boone Whiting led Springfield into the Texas League Championship with a Sunday semi-final game 5 victory over Tulsa.

Results from the game played Sunday, September 9.

Springfield 3 vs. Tulsa 1

Newcomer Boone Whiting pitched his team into the Texas League Championship round with a 3-1 victory over visiting Tulsa. Springfield will host South Division champion Frisco in Game 1 of the Finals on Tuesday.

Co-Player of the Day Whiting tossed 74 pitches, 50 for strikes, over seven superb frames to earn the win. The only tally charged against him came in the third when he issued a lead-off walk that was followed by a two-out double, his sole hit yielded. Whiting proceeded to retire 13 of the next 14 batters he faced with the Drillers' only base runner coming on a one-out base-on-balls in the fourth. The right-hander had eight groundouts, six fly outs and four strikeouts.

Eric Fornataro was perfect in the eighth, fanning two. Keith Butler maneuvered around a two-out single for his third save in three Springfield playoff wins.

Co-Player of the Day Chris Swauger had a hand in all three of the S-Cards' runs. Double-doubles by Jamie Romak and Swauger resulted in the contest's first score in the second. Xavier Scruggs hit the first of his two sac flies to knock in Swauger later in that frame. Swauger and Scruggs produced their squad's final tally in the fourth when they repeated their double-and-sac-fly combination.

Swauger's performance came with a high price tag, however. His season ended in the top of the sixth when he robbed a rehabbing Troy Tulowitzki, playing in his fourth game, of a sure double into the left field gap. Swauger landed awkwardly, snapping his collar bone in four places.

Next game: Tuesday vs. Frisco (finals game 1): 7:08 PM CT, Carlos Martinez
