Visiting Surprise fell at Peoria by a 3-2 score on Friday night.
The Javelinas took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as first baseman Donald Lutz (Cin) launched a two-run home run off Saguaros starter J.C. Sulbaran (KC). Second baseman Kolten Wong had committed a throwing error prior.
Surprise closed the gap in the third on a solo home run by Wong, who was batting second. They tied the game on a fourth-inning triple by right fielder Cesar Puello (NYM) and a ground out.
Peoria pulled ahead for good in the fifth when minor league stolen base champ Billy Hamilton (Cin) singled, stole a base, moved up on a throwing error and came home on a ground out.
Left-hander Sam Freeman pitched a scoreless eighth for the Saguaros. He allowed a double and wild-pitched the runner to third before stranding him there. Still, eight of Freeman's 12 pitches were called strikes.
Earlier, Wong had reached in the first inning on a force out, but was caught trying to steal third base. He then fanned in the sixth and grounded out in the eighth to finish his night at 1-for-4.
The other Cardinal player to take the field on Friday night was designated hitter Colin Walsh, batting third. He walked, singled and struck out in four plate appearances.
