Both men made their professional managerial debuts this season, with their predecessors having won championships the year prior. In fact in Marmol's case, the 26-year-old was following the Appalachian League's title-winning manager from both 2010 and 2011, Mike Shildt.
Like Matheny, Marmol guided his initial club, the Johnson City Cardinals, successfully through the regular season. Though they did not win their divisions, both entered the post-season, only to fall just one victory short of making the finals.
Of course, in the minor leagues, the primary focus is player development. The staffs mold the young men assigned them into better ballplayers and stronger human beings. Marmol and his coaches, Ramon Ortiz and Doug White, were no exception.
In the exclusive audio interview that follows, Marmol recaps the 2012 season and the highlights of many of his Johnson City players.
